Black and White
Hello again, glad you’ve found your way back here.
This time round, as mentioned in the last post, and I suppose in the title of this post, I have a couple of black and white rolls of film to share. Shooting, and particularly editing, black and white photos felt quite novel. I think it’s been around two years since the last time that I shot a full black and white roll of film. Hence, thinking about compositions and finding a neat editing flow felt like a bit of a challenge. Enjoyable at times, frustrating at others.
The first set of photos here is from a roll of medium format Kodak Tri-X 400 which I shot over the course of two back-to-back weekends at the start of March in Bristol and Weston-Super-Mare. It was really good to get out to Weston and start putting my talk of shooting in resort towns into action, and it was good fun! Basically all of the “visual cues” that I was hoping for were about, so it felt like a fruitful journey. I think it’ll be really interesting to see how this potential project, which I guess I can now say is officially a work-in-progress, pans out.
The temporality of this second roll of film stands in stark contrast with the one above. I took the first 20 or so shots on it back in summer 2023, so it is probably the longest I’ve ever had a roll in a camera, which I think shows the reluctance I had for a long time to shoot black and white. Again we’ve got some Tri-X going, but this is 35mm. The order is a bit jumbled up, but it’s a fun collection of photos.
This is a relatively bare favourites section. I think there were quite a few photos that I liked but didn’t quite pass into this tier. I think this is often the case with black and white photos, it’s hard to get the same punch as with colour. So it’ll probably be a while until the next lot of monochrome madness.
I hope you enjoyed! More photos very soon, film is all pretty much done for the next post.
